Wayne Vaught Named Interim President of Utah Valley University: What's Next for UVU? (2026)

A New Chapter for Utah Valley University: A Leadership Transition Unveiled

Utah Valley University (UVU) is embarking on an exciting journey with a fresh interim leader at the helm. Amid the search for a permanent president, the Utah Board of Higher Education has appointed Wayne Vaught as the interim president, a decision that brings both experience and a deep connection to the university's mission.

But here's where it gets intriguing: Vaught isn't new to the role of acting president for UVU. He has previously served in this capacity and now steps into this role with a wealth of academic leadership experience.

"Wayne Vaught's appointment is a testament to his understanding of UVU's unique position and its students' needs," said Amanda Covington, Chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education. "His background as a provost, dean, and scholar makes him an ideal candidate to guide the university during this interim period."

And this is the part most people miss: Vaught's appointment follows the resignation of Astrid Tuminez, who has led Utah's largest university for nearly seven years. Tuminez's departure and Vaught's official appointment will both take effect on May 1, marking a significant leadership transition.

In the coming weeks, Vaught will work closely with Tuminez to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities, maintaining operational continuity and a seamless leadership transition, as per the university's statement.

Vaught's journey to UVU began in 2019, but his academic leadership experience spans over two decades. Before joining UVU, he served at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, including a stint as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He has also held positions as an interim dean, associate dean, and department chair of philosophy, and even taught as an assistant professor at Drexel University College of Medicine.

"We are incredibly grateful for President Astrid S. Tuminez's dedication and service to UVU," said Geoffrey Landward, Commissioner of Higher Education. "And we extend our appreciation to Wayne Vaught for stepping up during this transition. His experience and commitment to academic excellence will undoubtedly benefit the entire university community."

So, what does this mean for UVU's future? While Vaught's appointment is temporary, his leadership will undoubtedly shape the university's trajectory during this interim period. As UVU continues its search for a permanent president, Vaught's steady hand will guide the institution through this transition, ensuring a bright future for the university and its students.

What are your thoughts on this leadership transition? Do you think Vaught's experience will benefit UVU during this interim period? Feel free to share your opinions and insights in the comments below!
