Take John Hilfigure, for example, a resident of Gouverneur, New York. His utility bill has nearly doubled, jumping from a manageable $130 per month last year to a staggering $215 in January 2026. For those living on a fixed income, this increase is a significant burden.
But here's where it gets controversial... The New York State Public Service Commission approved National Grid's request for a three-year rate increase, citing the need to keep up with inflation. National Grid's Jared Paventi defended the move, stating, "The profit is about maintaining business, not lavish spending." However, this explanation doesn't sit well with everyone.
Hilfigure feels the state could be doing more to support customers facing these higher bills. "There needs to be someone looking out for the people," he said. "No one is doing that."
And this is the part most people miss... The impact extends beyond individual households. Local businesses, like New York Pizzeria in Gouverneur, are also feeling the pinch. Co-owner Kayla Caimbra explained that they've had to make operational adjustments to manage higher costs. They've turned off fans and neon lights to save on energy, and their utility costs have increased by over $200 compared to last year, with a jump from $606 to $830 for December and early January.
Caimbra emphasized the restaurant's commitment to avoiding cost pass-ons to customers, but acknowledged the challenge: "Everything is going up, and our costs are definitely rising."
