In a startling development, the FBI has announced that an individual has been taken into custody following a series of protests in north Minneapolis that escalated into acts of vandalism and potential endangerment of federal documents. On Thursday evening, FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that, "One individual who allegedly stole federal government property out of an FBI vehicle in Minneapolis last night has been arrested." This individual is reportedly affiliated with the Latin Kings gang and has a documented history of violent crime.
While Patel refrained from disclosing the suspect's name, he hinted that further arrests are anticipated, indicating that this incident may not be isolated.
The unrest unfolded after an ICE agent shot a man in the leg on Wednesday night in the same area. WCCO Photojournalist Tom Aviles, who was nearby two hours after the shooting, captured significant moments of the chaos as it unfolded.
During the protests, a group of demonstrators forcefully breached two unmarked FBI vehicles parked nearby. They managed to pry open the trunk of one vehicle, where they desperately attempted to access a large lock box. The protesters then turned their attention to a second vehicle, successfully breaking into a locked container that, by that time, had already been emptied.
One protester expressed disbelief at the situation, stating, "It feels sort of surreal. It doesn't feel like this should be the world we have to live in." Another woman shared what she claimed were documents retrieved from the vehicle, allegedly originating from the U.S. Marshals Service. She described them as containing sensitive information, including operational details on how detainees are apprehended and transported, along with instructions for accessing secured facilities.
As tensions rose, Minneapolis police intervened by deploying tear gas and pepper balls to disperse the crowd. The vandalized SUVs, now marked with graffiti, were subsequently towed away from the scene.
In response to the incident, the FBI has announced a reward of up to $100,000 for information that could lead to the identification and arrest of those responsible for the vandalism and the return of any stolen items.
