Dalton Papali’i Hints at Overseas Move: What’s Next for the All Blacks Star? (2026)

Dalton Papali’i, a loose forward for the Blues and the All Blacks, has made a compelling suggestion that he may be pursuing opportunities abroad before his current contract in New Zealand concludes at the end of next year.

In rugby circles, it’s no secret that Papali’i had some disagreements with Scott Robertson, the former All Blacks head coach. With recent leadership changes in the team, it seems unlikely that the 28-year-old will choose to extend his stay or even complete his existing contract. "I’ve been here for around nine years... I have gained a lot of perspective over this time," he shared with 1News. "I want to grow my family, and many are choosing to go overseas to improve their financial situations. This is where I grew up and will always be home for me, but I want to leave the jersey in a better condition than when I found it. I’m still considering my options."

Last year, Papali’i welcomed a daughter into his family but only stepped onto the field for one Test, coming off the bench in a match against France that did not impact the series results. Since his debut for the All Blacks in 2018, he has played a total of 37 Test matches.

Having been left out of both the Rugby Championship and November squads, Papali’i was cautious when discussing his relationship with Robertson, who was dismissed in January during his four-year tenure. However, he did mention that he played a role in the review process that ultimately led to Robertson's departure. "I was involved, but I'll keep the details private," he remarked.

Papali’i recently captained the All Blacks XV to three victories under the guidance of Jamie Joseph last November, reflecting on the previous year as quite turbulent. "Returning to Counties was probably the best decision for me; it reignited my passion for the game. Playing alongside teammates eager to reach the next level, and witnessing their willingness to absorb knowledge and work hard, really grounded me.

"We started our season poorly at 0-5, but we managed to turn things around and came very close to defeating Canterbury in the quarter-finals. It was an intense match."

Regarding Joseph, who is likely to be involved with the All Blacks from mid-year, Papali’i expressed, "I had a great rapport with Jamie Jo, and I felt like I rediscovered my former self while playing for the All Blacks XV.

"Taking on a leadership role again, especially the captaincy, was something I embraced wholeheartedly. I enjoyed it and felt I performed well once more. Everyone contributed to building a strong culture, which I credit to Jamie Jo and the coaching staff for creating an environment where we could all excel. I absolutely loved that experience."

The All Blacks XV celebrated victories against teams such as the Barbarians, England A, and Uruguay during November. Reflecting on his exclusion from the All Blacks last year, he stated, "I’ve done a lot of thinking about that time. Initially, I questioned my worth and felt impacted by a few individuals' opinions. However, going back to Counties and playing for the ABs XV reminded me of my love for the game.

"I experienced a transition from the leadership of Shag [Sir Steve Hansen] and Fozzie [Ian Foster] to Razor's vision, and it was evident there was a significant shift. People voiced their concerns, leading to a review process that we followed. What happened in the past is behind us now."

With Patrick Tuipulotu recovering from a shoulder injury, Papali’i has taken on the captaincy for the Blues once again. He commented on how becoming a father has profoundly shifted his outlook.

"It has helped me find balance. I used to be hyper-focused on rugby, but this job demands your best every day. Coming home to a dog greeting me and my partner holding our baby changes everything."
